From Praise to Rage: Conservative Reaction to Epstein File Release is Mixed.

Conservative responses to the partial release of files involving the Epstein case have been sharply divided, with some backers of the previous administration pointing out the prominent presence of Bill Clinton and additional Democratic figures in images, while others expressed frustration over how extensive redactions cast Donald Trump and Republicans in a negative light.

Justice Department Justifies Censorship with Fervent Rhetoric

Justice Department representatives justified the redactions with fervent hyperbole. “At no point in American history has a President or the Justice Department been this transparent with the public about such a delicate law enforcement issue,” stated a senior Justice official Todd Blanche, who released a six-page memo outlining the censorship procedure.

Concerns Raised by Redactions

While the former president's identity and likeness appear in some of the documents, the widespread redactions prompt serious questions about what may be concealed behind them. A number of conservative lawmakers swiftly demanded increased openness.

“The public are furious and disengaging,” wrote Georgia Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene.

In a social media post, GOP Kentucky Thomas Massie asserted the censorship break the statute, and suggested that a subsequent Congress may move to impeach the Attorney General, Pam Bondi, for that violation. “Unfortunately, this file dump grossly does not comply with both the spirit and the letter of the act,” he added.

Some Conservative Commentators Rally Behind the Release

However, some rightwing pundits and former President allies swung firmly behind the Justice Department's actions.

The release—originating from a justice department run by close Trump associate Pam Bondi—includes scores of pages that are entirely redacted, and many of the individuals shown in photographs have their faces obscured.

Yet a few do not, featuring prominent figures like Clinton, entertainer Michael Jackson, and academic Noam Chomsky. The inclusion of the former president, in particular, allowed certain conservative voices to launch the offensive.

“It’s quite ironic how the Democrats falsely claimed Donald Trump of being a sex offender, only for the Trump DOJ to release Epstein files that show Bill Clinton skinny dipping with a convicted sex offender,” wrote right-wing commentator Laura Loomer.

“New Epstein Files show Bill Clinton without a shirt in a hot tub with a woman that is other than his spouse Hillary Clinton,” wrote attorney Rogan O’Handley. “There is only 1 explanation Epstein would photograph a US President with a girl in a jacuzzi: Leverage.”

Former President Spokesperson Issues Statement

Clinton has consistently stated he knew of zero criminal activity by Epstein and has never been accused to have participated in any misconduct. “The White House has not been concealing those files for months only to dump them late on a Friday to shield Bill Clinton,” Clinton’s representative Angel Ureña stated in a statement.

“The release is about shielding themselves from future revelations, or from what they’ll try and conceal forever. So they can release as many grainy decades-old photos as they desire, but this is not about Bill Clinton. Never has, never will be,” the response concluded.

Broader Conservative Commentary Remains Subdued

However, broader discourse on the political right was comparatively muted following the disclosure, particularly when compared with the loud demands for transparency that came before the legislative approval to pass a law requiring the files' release.

Loomer, who recently accepted press credentials at the Defense Department, had been one of the loudest proponents for a full release. Earlier this year, she criticized the Justice Department broadly and Bondi specifically after a group of rightwing personalities were given hard-copy binders of files that contained little new data.
